An eating disorder is a mental illness in which the person has an unhealthy and compulsive relationship with food, body and weight. There are many different types of eating disorders and they all manifest themselves in different ways. It could be, for example, overeating or avoiding food altogether. A person of normal weight can have an eating disorder, as it is the thoughts and reflections that are crucial. This is why people with a mental disorder are not always emaciated, as is often portrayed.
Many portray themselves as living a normal life with study, work, family and friends at the same time. However, in many cases, over the long term, they are either significantly underweight or overweight.
The development of an eating disorder
People who suffer from this have many thoughts about food, body and weight and a very bad relationship with food in general. This can lead to rapid and unhealthy weight loss and weight gain. However, people have a distorted view of their own body so they often can’t see what they realistically look like.
Fear of weight is a key part of the disorder. There may be additional concerns with an eating disorder. The key is for the person to seek help as this mental disorder can lead to malnutrition.

If one has had this mental disorder for a long time, obvious symptoms come as the lack of food affects the body. Symptoms can include fatigue and weakness, dizziness, palpitations, poor circulation, hair loss, constipation and dehydration.
In the worst cases, an eating disorder can cause swelling in the legs and a slow pulse. You may get chills that won’t stop or other signs of low body temperature. In addition, one’s immune system is lowered.
